Slightly more people applied for life insurance in October

The number of individually underwritten life insurance applications filed rose 1.6% in October, compared to the same period last year, according to the monthly MIB Life Index.

Researchers said the increase was better than reported, given that this past October had fewer business days than the same month in 2010.

For the year, application activity is off 0.4%.

“At a time when the U.S. economy is struggling to define direction, the pipeline for new life

insurance business appears to be holding its own,” said Lee Oliphant, MIB’s CEO, in a statement.

The increase was for all ages combined, but was fueled mostly by those age 60 and above, who marked a 10.9% increase in October over the same month last year, according to the index.

Other age groups didnt do as well. Appli

Happy Meals are Getting Healthier

In an effort to offer healthier meals to children, McDonalds plans to decrease the portion of French fries and include a fruit or vegetable serving in each of its Happy Meals.

The company, which has been under pressure from health advocacy groups to offer healthier food to children, rolled out a list of changes on Tuesday.

French fry holders will be reduced from 2.4 ounces to 1.1. The company tried cutting fries from kids’ meals entirely, but customers objected.

Side dishes will include apple slices, carrots, raisins, pinapple slices or mandarin oranges.

Whither Rhode Island?: “Manicestation” and Contribution Claims

Rhode Island has the distinction of being not only the smallest state in the union but also one of the few that still adhere to the principle of “manifestation” in resolving long-tail insurance coverage disputes. Both “manifestation” and “all sums” are similar in that the insured’s rights are initially limited to a single year of coverage. They differ dramatically, in that the “all sums” approach recognizes that bodily injury or property damage may have occurred over a period of years and allows the targeted insurer to seek contribution from insurers in other years where injury occurred (although generally not from the insured for uninsured or self-insured periods.) By contrast, the “manifestation” approach assumes that bodily injury or property damage has only occurred in the particular year where it was discovered or, as Rhode Island courts have ruled, when it was discoverable through the exercise of reasonable diligence. Microfilm with personal plan enrollment information from 60s, 70s lost

A St. Louis-based plan administrator disclosed that a delivery service has lost a box of microfilm containing plan enrollment information from the 1960s and 1970s.

On Aug. 23, Concordia Plan Services (CPS), formerly known as the plan administrator Worker Benefit Plans, was notified of the loss. On Feb. 3, CPS had hand-delivered the records to a vendor hired to convert the microfilm to an electronic format.

The loss occurred when the records were being transferred between the company assisting the vendor with the conversion process and the vendor. In May 2011, the delivery service had notified the vendor that the microfilm was lost, according to CPS.

The records contained some participants personal information, including names, addresses from the 1960s and 1970s, and dates of birth. I

‘Dramatic shifts’ from Dodd-Frank mean new advisor ‘importance’

“Dramatic shifts” in the investment advisor profession are forecast as advisors prepare for the Dodd-Frank Act, a provision of the federal financial service reform to be enacted next year.

The number of investment advisors decreased this year for the first time since 2001, although total assets under management (AUM) were reported at an all-time high May 1, according to an annual report by the Investment Adviser Association (IAA) and National Regulatory Services (NRS) on trends of the investment advisory profession. The report is based on Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) data completed through May 1.

The total AUM reported were $43.8 trillion, a 13.7% increase from $38.6 trillion last year and the highest level of AUM ever reported. The
