Is your multi-car policy costing you more?

If you’ve got more than one car, then it might seem obvious to go for a multi-car policy, but this may not always be the most cost-effective route. According to research by swiftcover.com some two-car households could save money by insuring their vehicles separately, rather than going for a multi-car policy.

In fact, analysis by the insurer found that a household insuring both a BMW 318 and a Ford Focus could save £258 by insuring the two vehicles separately.

So even if your insurer is offering what seems like a really competitive discount on your home’s second car, it still makes sense to compare car insurance prices online first to see if you can find a cheaper deal.

After all, premiums can vary hugely between different insurers, depending on the car you drive and whether or not the provider wants to attract drivers like you.

Sarah Vaughan, a spokeswoman for swiftcover.com, said: “It’s easy to assume that multi-car discounts must offer the best value, but it’s clearly not the case for everyone.

Claim example: lymphoma in 3 year old mixed breed cat

Continuing on with our look at cancer in pets, here is a series of treatments for Coney, a 3 year old (when diagnosed)mixed breed cat, with Anterior MediastinalLymphoma (which is a lump in the chest cavity).

Coneys policy has a $500 annual deductible and a 35% copay, plus a $10,000 annual maximum, which keeps the premiums down (around $10 a month)butthe total claim payoutis about half the cost. If hed had a 20% copay (premiums around $13 a month), the payout would have been $542 higher ($2,888.76).

Thats why I always encourage the lower copay if you can afford it – it reduces the variability of your costs if you have big claims.

You can see that Coney had her initial treatment from August 2008 through toApril 2009.She tolerated it well and only had her whiskers drop out, which is common for a cat on chemotherapy.

Claim Example: b cell metaplasm (rectal tumor) in Dachshund

In my previous post, I mentioned Maggie, the 2 year oldDachshund, who was treated for a rectal tumor and the fact that she is still alive at age 5 and well enough to have her teeth cleaned.

I thought you might be interested in the details of the cost of her treatment back in 2008.

Thats surgery to remove the mass and 6 months of chemotherapy totalling $8,038.05.

Maggie has not had any claims since these treatments until she recently had her periodontal work done in March 2011.

Maggies policy has a $500 annual deductible, 10% copay and a $10,000 annual maximum and drugs/dental coverage was included. Her premiums have ranged from $21 a month back in 2007 to $32 a month in 2011.

What do you think?

Focus on: New car insurance for young drivers

While the fuel duty reduction announced in the Budget may have brought some relief to young drivers, for many the cost of motoring remains unaffordable due to steep insurance premiums. Motorists in their teens or early twenties pay substantially higher premiums than older drivers because they are considered higher risk by insurers. According to the Driving Standards Agency, in the UK, an 18-year-old driver is more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash as a 48-year-old.

But now The Co-operative Insurance has become the latest insurer to launch a policy specifically for young drivers, which promises lower premiums if the policyholder can demonstrate that they are responsible on the roads.

Here, we look at how the policy works and whether it could be right for you…

Insurance leads: not all leads are created equal

It is important that you go into using insurance leads with realistic expectations. Some leads will turn out to be better than others, and depending on how you speak to your customers, you will have varying degrees of success.

Some things you should be aware of:

Ask for pertinent information. Sometimes a potential client might enter the wrong phone number or some incorrect data that affects the quote. If a client has entered fake information, you can get a refund for those leads.
