Not Enough Insurance? You Could Face Financial Meltdown

Last week, Investopedia ran a story on the five easiest ways to suffer financial ruin. So, what tops the list? You guessed it: Lack of insurance.

The piece, titled “5 Simple Ways You Can Ruin Your Financial Life,” focuses specifically on homeowners who neglect to purchase flood insurance:

“Every year there are reports of significant catastrophic flooding in some part of the United States, and every year that means some homeowners are facing an economic wipeout. Standard homeowners insurance excludes flood damage, and many homeowners neglect to buy a flood policy.”

What the article doesn’t have space to mention, however, is that lack of health insurance is one of the biggest financial scourges facing Americans today.

Holiday Fire Tips!

Fires are a major risk during the winter holiday season. I have posted an article of winter holiday fire safety tips for your home and business.

In addition to that article there are many places online to seek out fire safety tips and checklists. For example, the National Fire Protection Association has “Project Holiday” on its website. The site features full-size color posters for download addressing candle and cooking safety (most home fires in the United States are the result of unattended cooking) and videos addressing those topics and Christmas tree safety.

On-Duty Firefighter Fatalities Decreased in 2011

There were 81 on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States as a result of incidents that occurred in 2011, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), representing an almost seven percent decrease from the 87 fatalities reported for 2010.

The 81 fatalities occurred in 33 states, one U.S. territory, and one overseas U.S. military facility.

Texas experienced the highest number of fatalities (seven). North Carolina experienced six firefighter deaths and was the only other state with five or more firefighter fatalities.
