Slightly more people applied for life insurance in October

The number of individually underwritten life insurance applications filed rose 1.6% in October, compared to the same period last year, according to the monthly MIB Life Index.

Researchers said the increase was better than reported, given that this past October had fewer business days than the same month in 2010.

For the year, application activity is off 0.4%.

“At a time when the U.S. economy is struggling to define direction, the pipeline for new life

insurance business appears to be holding its own,” said Lee Oliphant, MIB’s CEO, in a statement.

The increase was for all ages combined, but was fueled mostly by those age 60 and above, who marked a 10.9% increase in October over the same month last year, according to the index.

Happy Meals are Getting Healthier

In an effort to offer healthier meals to children, McDonalds plans to decrease the portion of French fries and include a fruit or vegetable serving in each of its Happy Meals.

The company, which has been under pressure from health advocacy groups to offer healthier food to children, rolled out a list of changes on Tuesday.

French fry holders will be reduced from 2.4 ounces to 1.1. The company tried cutting fries from kids’ meals entirely, but customers objected.

Side dishes will include apple slices, carrots, raisins, pinapple slices or mandarin oranges.

Louisiana Elevator Falls, People Trapped

An elevator in the American Tower in downtown Shreveport fell several stories with one person suffering minor injuries

According to the Times, three people were on board when the elevator fell five floors before it braked, stopping at the second floor Tuesday afternoon

Arriving firefighters were unable to open the closed elevator with the emergency key and had to force entry using the Jaws of Life

Firefighters say the unidentified injured 24-year-old man was taken to a local hospital for treatment of back pain
